The Golden Key takes the reader on a voyage to a real treasure island in a story of mutiny and salty intrigue, authentic in its narrative, re-creating the golden days of sea adventure and piracy.

Being his next voyage to that to Nombre de Dios formerly imprinted; carefully collected out of the Notes of Master Francis Fletcher, Preacher in his employment, and divers others his followers in the same; offered now at last to publique view, both for the honour of the actor, but especially for the stirring up of heroick spirits, to benefit their country, and eternize their names by like noble attempts. London: printed for Nicholas Bourne, and are to be sold at his shop at the Royal Exchange. 1628.

It was edited by Drake’s nephew. Acopy of the first part of the notes of Master Francis
Fletcher, which (or one like it) must have been before the compiler, is in the British Museum, and it is printed below the text for comparison in the Hakluyt Society’s edition of this book (1854). In the British Museum also are other manuscript notes relating to this voyage, which are printed as Appendix to the aforesaid volume, together with extracts from Hakluyt’s Trafficks and Discoveries.

Each map covers an area of 40 km by 40 km (25 miles by 25 miles) and like other Ordnance Survey maps, National Grid squares are provided so that any feature can be identified with a unique reference number.
